  • Older Pioneer Elite receivers in this price range aren’t exactly inferior when it comes to audio quality but the newer Elite SC-72 is ready to handle next generation technologies including 4K resolution. 4K pass-through is supported allowing 4K TVs to handle 4K content driven by the other next generation components supporting 4K. In addition to that, this receiver can also upscale lower resolution content to 4K resolutions so you can still enjoy high quality visuals if a 4K displays is connected to the receiver. Advanced Qdeo Video Processing is responsible for the picture enhancements.

  • The Pioneer Elite SC-35 is a top end 7.1 channel audio receiver built for enthusiasts. The 6 HDMI inputs use the next-generation v1.4a, making them ready to support 3D video and audio. 2 dedicated HDMI outputs are also included, allowing for the clearest possible signal to reach displays and other equipment. Audio output is sent to the 7 main channels at 140 watts using the Direct Energy HD Amplification system, which ensures a distortion-free amplification of the signal that remains true to the original recording and has the AIR Studios Monitor certification. Audio calibration for a room is handled through the Multi-Channel Acoustic Calibration system (MCACC), which automatically makes adjustments for a room's given acoustics. All video is upscaled automatically by the Marvell Video Scaler, making even analog signals equivalent to 1080p / 24fps high definition and creating a picture that's much easier to see. A graphic user interface for the unit is available, and the entire system can be controlled through a PC web browser. Bluetooth support allows for connection to wireless devices for media playback, and full iPod and iPhone control is available. 24 presets are built in for Internet radio through the Ethernet port.

Pushed as the top of the Pioneer Elite receivers, the SC-09TX includes Qdeo video processing for all six of its HDMI inputs. The receiver also has five component inputs, four for S-video, and eight for composite. Video processing features include HDMI x.v. Color, a component video converter, and support for videos straight from an iPod. Curiously, HDMI signals receive no video processing, and pass through unaltered.

  • The Pioneer VSX-70 lacks the Class D3 amplification that is present in all other SC Pioneer Elite models but you can still expect great audio performance from fairly large setups. Since this is a 7.2-channel receiver, you have plenty of options available. You can opt for the full 7.1 surround sound speaker setup or come up with a 5.1-channel setup in the main room and another 2.1-channel setup in another room. There is a second HDMI output called HDZONE so you can extend another video source to another display in addition to adding a second audio source. Multi-zone support is even better with the VSX-70 than other VSX models thanks to the custom installation support. Several third-party control devices are supported so you can build a nice custom home entertainment center. There is an RS-232 bus connection on the back and it supports full IP commands.

Not only does the Pioneer Elite SC-79 A/V receiver redefine the Elite moniker, it redefines what an A/V receiver is capable of. For that, Pioneer should be very proud, indeed. This receiver makes the choice between separates and A/V receivers just that much more difficult for audiophiles and home theater enthusiasts alike. Sure, Pioneer missed a few obvious points, such as the inclusion of Bluetooth and Wi-Fi out of the box, and we wish the company had put a little more control in the hands of the user by offering a customizable crossover point for each speaker. But at the end of the day, the SC-79 has what it takes to far exceed the expectations of those who choose it, and that makes it a top contender for us. The question on our minds is: How could Pioneer possibly do any better next year? Guess we’ll find out.
