  • Compact products can be very appealing—witness the , the BMW Mini Cooper, and the miniskirt. The HP Pavilion Slimline s3710t ($1,000 direct) is not quite as tiny as the Mac mini, but it is a lot smaller than the average mini-tower desktop. The s3710t is part of a long line of HP Slimline PCs we've seen over the past few years that marry compact form factor with full-size desktop components. The latest is no different, packing in a quad-core Intel processor, discrete Nvidia graphics, a full-size hard drive, and a Blu-ray optical drive. In fact, the s3710t is nearly identical to the ($1,119 list) I reviewed last year. The differences are modest, and not all of them are improvements. Take a look at the s3701t if you're in the market for a compact multimedia machine, but be wary of its drawback.

The slender HP Pavilion Slimline s5-1060 desktop PC boasts solid computing and some fancy features, such as a Blu-ray disc player. Though it has a discrete graphics card, you won't be able to use it for gaming, but if you're looking for a basic home and entertainment machine, this machine packs a decent punch for a pretty good price.

  • If you're looking for a svelte tower that performs well, the HP Pavilion Slimline s5-1060 isn't a bad bet--as long as you're not planning on doing anything fancy. But be forewarned: There's no Bluetooth connectivity, USB 3.0, FireWire, or e-SATA. On the positive side, its Blu-ray disc player, Wi-Fi, and TV tuner are all useful extra features.

The HP Pavilion Slimline s5710f is OK out of the box, but it is essentially non-upgradable. It feels as though HP took too much out to hit a price point, and that's not how you want to feel about a purchase that's supposed to last you five to seven years.
