Definitive Technology loudspeakers are among the most positively reviewed and honored high performance loudspeakers on the market. Based in Baltimore Definitive Technology is part of the DEI Holdings family of consumer electronics brands. While tech enthusiasts may be interested in the Play-Fi angle, it's not the focus of this sound bar. This is an excellent-performing movie and music machine with exacting build quality and a luxury feel. If you're looking for next-level sonics in a sound bar form factor, the Definitive Technology W Studio would have to be near the top.

  • As Definitive Technology is just the third company to release a Play-Fi product, alongside Polk and Phorus, it's worth breaking out the performance of the Play-Fi component -- especially as the performance of the was so underwhelming.

Subwoofer manufacturers are always talking about how "explosive" their subwoofers are (frankly so do we), but there's more to home entertainment than rocket blasts and explosions—there is also music, be it in the movies you watch or the CDs you enjoy. And for music the quality of a subwoofer's performance is way more important than the quantity. The bass should be "tight," precise, and musical. Bass notes should have pitch, not just a dull thud or drone. Definitive Technology was started by and is run today by music fanatics and the very first thing we do to evaluate a subwoofer prototype design is to listen to music. If a subwoofer doesn't do an exemplary job with music reproduction, it's not a Definitive.

Sandy Gross, founder of Definitive Technology, is the Mark McGwire of hi-fi. Somehow, this guy has been able to come up with one incredible speaker home run after another. As a result, there are two problems when reviewing a Def Tech speaker system. The first is that there has been so much praise and adulation penned in the past that it's hard to be complimentary without being repetitive. The second problem comes when it's time to pack up the speakers and ship them away. You start babbling wild excuses to extend the deadline. "My cousin's cat died…so much stress…I haven't had time to listen. I need another week…" Eventually, though, the painful time comes, and there you are with tears and packing tape, handing off your newfound loves to an oblivious UPS guy. "Treat them gently," you beg the guy in brown. (Man, it's tough being a reviewer.)
